Design Development - Occupiable Space

I think this image is very simple yet powerful.  A want to create occupiable space and informal gathering space in front the auditoriums for several reasons.

First it will then connect two building with the same function together.  And also the area benefits from winter sun and i think this will attracts people to utilise this space.

And then i can use the path between to create contrast, from a small space then suddenly a huge outdoor space that is close to nature. because of the contrast, this will enhance the spatial qualities of the outdoor and natural aspect.

And lastly, Adding brick walls to the gallery and also two trombe walls to reduce energy used on heating during winter.

Design Development - Designing in CAD

I decided to take the designing process to computer, so that when i finished it i can use it to generate plans and hero shots.

From the basic model i made, i played around with the edges of each space.  I am trying to create a more exciting space with path that circulates around the spaces, allow people to feel and experience contrast and freshness.

I started by looking at the south entrance and the main gallery, using structure-like design to recreate Brooklyn's industrial background. I also wanted to use similar material like steel structure and brick wall to enhance the history of this area.

Design Models - Mass Model in CAD

I continue the design process on Sketchup so that i have measurement of how big the space is and how much space i am using.  With some minor change to the design, a basic structure of the field station is completed.

Design Models - Form and Experience Exploration Model

I made a few junk model to explore the connection between my space and path, and experiment ways to joining them together.

Design Models - Galleries in Nature

My model is made in the scale of 1:1000, and also i decided not doing single building but rather the whole oasis.  This is because the highlight of this concept is not on buildings but rather the whole 'experience' when u access the urban oasis.

Design Models - CAD Models of the Galleries in Nature

The galleries in the centre of the oasis will be the buildings that showcase this project, because its role is capture the harmony of art and nature which symbolise the new Gowanus. I looked at the inspiration of the trees and roots and found it echoing with the previous design i have for the project.

Previous Concept

More Trees and Roots

i found the curve shape that descend into the ground very natural and organic, and the space between roots and ground can be occupied.  It allows the building to integrate into the nature without drawing too much attentions.

I started to explore this form digitally and ended up with a design that I'm very satisfied with; its organic, minimal, and the most important thing is that the peaceful balance of architecture, industrial and nature.

SketchUp - Exploring Form

Photoshop - Adding Texture

Im happy with the design and how it sits in the context, so i will add more details and use it as my hero shot for the boards.

Design Models - CAD Massing Models

After the form generating exercise, I took it digitally and tried few ideas from the sketches that i did.  Most of them didn't work out but there are few of them that i think are suitable for this context.  This is only a brief massing exercise so i believe the form of my buildings will change along the design process.
